︎ Tether, 2014

Tether is an interactive music video&#38;nbsp; for the electronic duo Plaid (link). The track is accompanied by a series of graphic shapes that gradually evolve as the music progresses; you can manipulate what you hear by clicking and dragging your mouse — or, if on your smartphone or tablet, touching and dragging on the screen.

	︎&#38;nbsp;This Exquisite Forest, 2012This Exquisite Forest is an experimental website that serves as a gallery of user-generated collaborative animations. Loosely based on the Surrealist’s Exquisite Corpse, the website allows people to create short hand-drawn animations that anyone else can add on to. These animations are then showcased on the website’s gallery. The gallery was on exhibit at the Tate Modern in London from July 2012 — July 2013. The result is an emerging community of fine artists, animators, and amateurs. The project is by Chris Milk and Aaron Koblin. It was produced by Google and Tate. I was a lead Designer and Front End Developer on the project.

︎ Under Neon Lights, 2017
Under Neon Lights is a psychological coming-of-age music video set to The Chemical Brothers track under the same name featuring St. Vincent. Using the immersive qualities of Virtual Reality, guide a young girl from her suburban home through the city as she navigates three distinct stages of her life. The core theme of both the song and the music video question traditional forms of happiness and success. Is this really all I want?&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;
The song asks questions through its lyrics, dance meter, and dissonant texture to give the song a surreal presence. The music video presents picturebook stylized life, but allows the user to distort these forms to achieve the surreal. As the girl ages to teenager and then to adult both the song and the distortions build. In the final moments of the video our young girl, now an adult, faces all the material objects in her life. These objects, however, are stripped of context and meaning only giving rise to more questions.

Technology allows us to interact with each other in new ways. Collaboration and creative development are not exempt from this phenomenon. My artistic process coupled with the ability to realize complex technical systems offers a unique, personal, and most importantly human perspective on digital art. This point of view enables artistic collaboration and distinguishes brands from traditional digital content. ︎ Unnumbered Sparks, 2014

Unnumbered Sparks is a monumental interactive sculpture in the sky. Choreographed by visitors in real time through their mobile devices, at night the sculpture became a crowd-controlled visual artwork on a giant, floating canvas to celebrate TED’s 30th anniversary.
&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; The sculpture spanned 745 feet between buildings in downtown Vancouver, Canada for one week in March, 2014. After sunset the sculpture came alive with illumination. Visitors with smartphones and tablets were able to paint vibrant beams of light across the sculpture at a remarkable scale: small movements on their phones became hundred foot long trails evolving and combining with fellow participants. As part of Google’s Data Arts Team, I developed, designed, and architected the visuals that visitors created on the sculpture.

	︎ The Doomsday Invention, 2015
The Doomsday Invention (link) is the title of an in-depth New Yorker article written by Raffi Katchadourian. In it, he explores the ethics and futures of artificial intelligence primarily through the thoughts, events, and circumstances surrounding Oxford philosopher Nick Bostrom. Working with Brooklyn-based studio Hunter Gatherer (link) and the New Yorker art direction team, we realized the publication’s first interactive illustration. This gave added weight to the article’s cover spreads on both the publication’s website and mobile applications, while simultaneously staying consistent with printed material.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; The direction stems from the concept of cumulative computer functions or routines. Each routine individually is rather simplistic, hence the geometric foundation. However, when combined and automated there are radically large combinations that yield unique but cohesive elements. The earthen color palette furthers the mundane nature of these routines. As society enlists more use cases of artificial intelligence,&#38;nbsp; its currently mysterious movements will emerge as perceivable intent.

There is a wealth of information in our world today. This surplus is thanks to the everyday technology we use to enrich our lives. With a few taps on your smartphone or clicks on your computer keyboard, we are presented scientific advancements, athletic milestones, political developments, and dinner recipes, instantaneously, and from multiple sources around the world. In one sense, technology collapses time and space in order to deliver information to us. But, what purpose does this serve exactly? I am interested in using this abundance of information as a medium to depict the human experience and the systems that implicitly guide that experience.

		<description>

Hey there, my name is Jono and I use graphic design and computer programming to explore the expressive qualities of technology. Like a painter, I observe, then I express what I see, and then I repeat the process over and over again. Information is my paint, technologies are my brushes, and making objects, both digital and physical, my canvas. To see some of my work, both artistic and commerical, keep on scrolling and thanks for stopping by.
